New to Scouting? Everything you need is on this page. The best way to find out if Scouting is for you is to come along — your first three weeks are free, and you don’t need a uniform.
How to join

Get in touch
Email our Group Leader Dain Carman at gl.Bannockburnlethbridge@scoutsvictoria.com.au with the young person’s name and age. We’ll tell you which unit suits and when to come along.

Come and try
Turn up on the night in comfortable clothes and closed-in shoes, with a drink bottle. Three weeks free, no obligation.

Register
If it’s a fit, we’ll send you the online registration link. Scouts Victoria invoices the annual membership fee directly; our Treasurer invoices the term fee separately.

Get invested
Within a few weeks you’ll be welcomed into the unit at your investiture, receive your group scarf, woggle and badges, and join a patrol or six.

Meetings run during Victorian school terms. The Scout and Venturer ages overlap at 14 so young people can move up when they are ready, rather than on a fixed birthday.

What it costs
Annual membership
Paid to Scouts Victoria and invoiced to you directly when you register.
Group term fee — $60 per term
Invoiced by our Treasurer. Covers hall hire, badges and equipment upkeep. Camps and activities are charged separately.
We never want cost to be a barrier. Scouts Victoria offers financial assistance, and you can talk to our Group Leader in confidence.
Uniform
Once you decide to join, the only thing you need to buy is the section uniform shirt from the Scout Shop. Most Cubs wear the button-up shirt and most Scouts wear the polo, but it’s personal preference. Belts and activity shirts are optional. We sometimes have second-hand shirts available — just ask.
Your scarf, woggle and badges are provided by the group at your investiture.

Yes, the two sections use different chat apps — that’s a section leader choice. If you have children in both, you’ll be invited to both.
For parents and carers
Scouting runs because parents pitch in. You don’t need any experience — help on a meeting night, lend a hand at camp, maintain equipment, join the Group Support Committee, or train as a leader. Scouts Victoria provides the training and our group covers the course fees.
Got a skill or interest you could share with the kids? We’re always looking for new experiences for our members.
Every adult in Scouting holds a current Working with Children Check and completes child-safe training — we’ll walk you through it.
Questions we get asked
Does my child need a uniform to try Scouts?
No. Comfortable clothes and closed-in shoes for the first three weeks.
Do parents have to stay?
Not usually, but you’re always welcome to stay and help.
What if we can only come some weeks?
That’s fine — come when you can. The more you come, the more you get out of it.
What happens in the school holidays?
Unit meetings pause, but camps and activities often run. Check What’s on.
My child is 14 — Scouts or Venturers?
Either. The two sections overlap at 14 so young people can move up when they are ready. Come and try both and see which fits.
My child has additional needs — is Scouting for them?
Yes. We’re an inclusive group and welcome young people of all abilities, backgrounds and beliefs. Tell us what support is needed and we’ll work it out together.
Is there a Joey Scout section?
Not yet — we’re working on it for ages 5 to 8. Get in touch if you can help.
